Thom Yorke - Jahrhunderthalle, Frankfurt, 3.7.2019

If you want to know how it actually feels when your left brain is struggling with the right brain, treat yourself to a @thomyorke ANIMA show:
While your inner animal wants to move to the groove and the deceptively deep beats that are coming from Thom and Nigel Godrich, there's this little problem - there are a ton of different rhythmic layers in each song, and while your intellect still tries to grasp the logic, suddenly the great visuals (by Tarik Barri) will simply stun you in mid-thought. Then sometimes the rhythmic layers' interferences will form a ...

Red Brauns

What is Braun and makes for an honest good filtered coffee? Right.

TYPO3 8.7 translation handling of page media

Yesterday I once again got stuck with a seemingly simple task that quickly turned out to be a veritable rabbit hole:

In a client website the header images are managed using the 'resources' tab of a page. File references are stored in the 'media' column of the pages table in the database.

The site is set up for multi language, has language fallbacks set and for page contents everything works as expected. But when a translation of a page is created, those file references are gone for the translation, resulting in this case in having no header images on the translated ...

wget it on

Today the german hosting company "domainFactory" (dF) announced that they will stop supporting the old PHP Versions 4 and 5. dF is one of the last providers to do so.

So this comes as no surprise and I've been waiting for this moment for quite a while now: We have a couple of $clients that are running an old Version of the CMS "TYPO3" on hosting packages at domainFactory, and who won't update to a newer version, no matter how often we advised them. We have discussed, we pleaded, we stated more than once how important it ...

Status as a Service - Eugene Wei

A very interesting article by @eugenewei about social capital and how social networks tap into our need to compete and feel somewhat better than the rest.

We are now in late-stage performative Twitter, where nearly every tweet is hungry as hell for favorites and retweets, and everyone is a trained pundit or comedian. It's hot takes and cool proverbs all the way down. The harmless status update Twitter was a less thirsty scene but also not much of a business (…)
a social network should continue to prioritize distribution for the best content, whatever the definition of ...

Can “Indie” Social Media Save Us? – Cal Newport, The New Yorker

A nice article about the IndieWeb, published on a paywalled site ("you have three articles left this month") 🤷🏼‍♂️. I find it a bit too focussed on servers and social media platforms, but with the right angle about 'engineered adictiveness'.

(…) a loose collective of developers and techno-utopians that calls itself the IndieWeb has been creating another alternative. The movement’s affiliates are developing their own social-media platforms, which they say will preserve what’s good about social media while jettisoning what’s bad. They hope to rebuild social media according to principles that are less corporate and more humane.

Take back your web - Tantek Çelik @ Beyond Tellerrand Conference, Düsseldorf 2019

Watch this. Understand this.

For quite a while now I really think we are at a crucial point in the history of the web.

Beyond Tellerrand Düsseldorf 2019

Empty row of red seats, in the background the Beyond Tellerrand Logo on a mirror above the bar

For the ninth year I attended this great small conference about Web, Design and going beyond. Here are some notes and thoughts. Maybe I polish it later, but I want to get this out of my head.

These moments stuck with me - which does not mean that any talk that is not mentioned here didn't. This conference's iteration was very very very good, there was not one talk that wasn't great. All killers, no fillers. This here is just a first .brain { overflow: visible;}:
